This painting is of the wild horses of Shackleford Banks. I had taken the ferry over to Cape Lookout because I wanted to photograph the Cape Lookout lighthouse so I could paint it. As we were sailing past Shackleford Banks I could see the horses as they were grazing. From a distance it appeared as if they were standing on water. As we got closer I could see the small flat grassy islands that the horses were standing on. It is a very interesting sight. So the next day I took the ferry over to Shackleford Banks and spent the day photographing the island and the horses. I was able to get within 30 yards or so of the horses. The lead stallion would always position himself between me and his mares. He keep a eye on me of course I keep an eye on him. It was a wonderful trip. This painting grew out of that experience.
